How to Apply

Please read all instructions below before completing your online application. We suggest that you reserve about 30 minutes to complete the online application.

To apply, you must submit the online application and all required documents to the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies along with the required nonrefundable application fee. The School of Graduate Studies will not process or review an application until the application fee is paid.

All of your information is transmitted through a secure server and is kept fully confidential. Your application information and accompanying credentials are reviewed by faculty admissions representatives of the department to which you are applying as well as by members of the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies staff.

  1. Click the 'Apply Now' button above to enter the application portal. Click on 'Create Account' at the top of the screen and fill out the required information. Please use a personal email and not a university email address. Your Log-in ID is the email address you entered, and it will enable you to return to your application as many times as you wish before your final submission to the School of Graduate Studies. If you lose access to the email you entered as your Log-in ID, you will not receive updates on your application or be able to reset your password.

  2. Select the 'Term of Interest' that you will be applying to, along with the 'Academic Program'. The 'Term of Interest' refers to the term your program will begin if you are offered admission. The 'Academic Program' refers to the program that you wish to apply to. If you do not see the program you wish to apply to listed, it may not be open for your desired term, or it may only be accessible through another UMB School's instance of the application portal (School of Nursing, School of Social Work, etc.).

  3. You will be directed to your Application Dashboard. Here, you can see any applications and events that you have registered in our system. You will also be able to create new applications and update your profile from this page.

To begin your application, click the 'Create a New Application' button.

  4. On the 'Application Listing' page, select 'School of Graduate Studies Application'. You will be directed to a list of your applications associated with the School of Graduate Studies. You can select a started application and choose to 'Continue the Current Application', or you can 'Start a New Application' if you wish to apply for a different program than you originally selected.

  5. You will be taken to the 'Application Form' to enter your personal, educational and professional information. This information cannot be edited once you submit your application and pay the application fee.

Note: You must start a new application and pay the application fee for each program you apply to. Applications and offers for admission cannot be transferred between programs.

  6. After you have submitted your application and paid the application fee, additional supplemental items will be generated based on the information entered on the 'Application Form' and the specific requirements for your desired program. Please ensure that you leave enough time to order and/or upload these documents, as additional processing time for official documents is common and can take several weeks. All documents, including test scores, transcripts and letters of recommendation, must be received by the application deadline in order for your application to be reviewed.

  7. Be sure to use the same Log-in ID and PIN when applying to more than one program; do not create a new account for each application or apply for the same program twice. If your account is locked, please contact gradapply@umaryland.edu to have it unlocked.

You may stop and save your work to continue at a later time while completing the online application. Please note, however, your application will not be reviewed or considered until it is submitted successfully with the application fee paid in full, nor until all required items are received.

Before you click the ‘Submit’ button of your online application print each page for your records. Write down your Log-in ID and PIN and keep them in a secure place for future reference when checking the status of your application.
