Educational Objectives

The goal of this 12-credit, six course online certificate program is to provide individuals with an understanding of the ethical and regulatory aspects of human subjects research and to provide them with the skills needed to analyze ethical issues that arise in the conduct of research in domestic and international arenas.

Six courses are offered during the Fall and Spring semesters (6 credits each semester) that enable students to complete the program within an academic year. However, since all courses stand-alone (i.e., are not dependent on each other), one may take these courses in any order and at their own pace and take up to three years to complete the program.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

Describe the ethical requirements for review of research.
Describe the ethics of socio-behavioral research
Discuss the ethics of research that addresses health inequities.
Evaluate protections for vulnerable populations.
Describe regulatory aspects of research
Integrate ethical theories into the analysis of research ethics issues.
Evaluate the ethical issues involved in international research.
Analyze ethics of international collaborations in research
Describe the regulatory aspects of research.

Online Pedagogy

Our pedagogy relies on the theories of Constructivism and Connectivism that view learning as a process in which the learner actively engages in new ideas through collaborative grouping situations.

The online certificate program fosters an online community and unlike traditional classroom learning, offers additional learning experiences where learners can interact, collaborate, and take ownership of their own learning.

Our faculty focus on instructional and pedagogical best practices in order to deliver effective online instruction. These include Collaborative group interactions that facilitate active learning, shared knowledge, and promote social interaction and a supportive online community.

Our faculty plan activities in which students work together on group projects from a distance by the use of digital tools such as google docs, google groups, and Zoom conferences.
