Students in a ‘stackable’ Master’s degree program that decide not to complete the Application for Diploma for a Certificate and thereby not receive the Certificate(s) the semester of graduation, forfeit the awarding of the Certificate at any later date. This determination has no bearing on the Master of Science degree completion.

Credit Hour Definition

The Graduate School utilizes the Federal definition of a credit hour as a guideline for
determining the credits associated with courses and programs.

Therefore, all certificate, MS, and PhD programs shall award 1 credit hour for:
1. A minimum of 15 hours, of 50 minutes each of instructor-led class time (lecture, seminar or
discussion) and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work;
2. A minimum of 30 hours each of supervised or independent laboratory time;
3. A minimum of 45 hours, of 50 minutes each of clinical instructional situations such as
practica, internships, and cooperative educational placements, when supervision is ensured and
learning is documented;
4. As based on the academic term.

Syllabi Statement Regarding Religious Accommodation

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to provide academic accommodation for a student if a
student’s observance of a sincerely held faith-based or religious belief or participation in a religious
activity affects the student’s ability to take an examination as scheduled or to satisfy another
