Credit Hour Definition
The Graduate School utilizes the Federal definition of a credit hour as a guideline for
determining the credits associated with courses and programs.
Therefore, all certificate, MS, and PhD programs shall award 1 credit hour for:
1. A minimum of 15 hours, of 50 minutes each of instructor-led class time (lecture, seminar or
discussion) and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work;
2. A minimum of 30 hours each of supervised or independent laboratory time;
3. A minimum of 45 hours, of 50 minutes each of clinical instructional situations such as
practica, internships, and cooperative educational placements, when supervision is ensured and
learning is documented;
4. As based on the academic term.
Syllabi Statement Regarding Religious Accommodation
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to provide academic accommodation for a student if a
student’s observance of a sincerely held faith-based or religious belief or participation in a religious
activity affects the student’s ability to take an examination as scheduled or to satisfy another
